About RenameFiles

It's a small nice tool to rename a lot of files at a single step. I created it to unify the view of all my mp3-files, but it's useful anyway.

OS: Windows 95/98/NT/2000

Quick Guide

How to use RenameFiles:

  1. Select a path or files

If you select 'Path name' then you can browse for a folder. After that you can change the filemask from '*.*' to '*.mp3' for example to rename mp3-files only.
    or
You can select 'Separate files' to specify some files. Use the 'Browse'-button or use the edit field. Note: Separate the files with semicolons.

  2. Choose options

Mark any option you like to use for renaming. Note: the options will be processed from top to bottom. If you need an other order so rename the same files twice or more.

  3. Preview

Use the 'Preview'-button to watch your work before the hot run starts. You can cancel your operation still if something goes wrong. If everything is ok, then you can press 'Rename'.

  4. Rename

Start renaming your files by pressing this button. A progress bar and a status line reports you the progress of all operations.

Renaming Files under Windows

A file name can contain up to 215 characters, including spaces. That is why I restricted the length to 215 characters at maximum too. However, it is not recommended that you create file names with 215 characters. But be carefully: most programs cannot interpret extremely long file names.

BTW: Windows suxx. Create a new file and give it the longest name as possible. Now copy or move this file to another (!) folder. Windows gets confused ...

File names cannot contain the following characters: \ / : * ? " < > |
